<image:title>John Rwothomack - How do you write for a one-person show? Is the process different when you're writing for yourself as the performer? How do you navigate with the creative when you're both the writer and actor? Who comes first, the writer or the actor? These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer in the session. John will use his first hand experience of writing and performing in FAR GONE, to take us through his process and his experience of solemnly working as an actor on projects, some of these questions will be answered and whatever pops us during the session. This session will be relaxed throughout, providing the opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you like.</image:title>

<image:title>John Rwothomack - ABOUT JOHN RWOTHOMACK</image:title>
<image:caption>John is a Ugandan born, London trained, and Sheffield bred and based actor, director and playwright. As an artist, John aims to bring African stories, culture, and history to the canvas of theatre. This includes creating new pieces about, and with, artists from the continent, staging plays that already exist, or adapting classics to an African context. John holds the view that African culture is not present enough in the UK’s theatre scene. As a result, there’s a lower rate of participation both in audience members and practitioners from this sector of the community. John’s acting credits include both theatre and film. Credits include: H&P, ON MISSING, (The Cockpit Theatre, London 2019), Dr Bupe, TALES FROM THE PLAYGROUND, (Paper Finch Theatre, Sheffield 2018), Priest, THE DEVIL IN MARY (short film York, 2017), Witch Doctor, THE EMPEROR JONES, (The Lost Theatre, London 2016), John Blanke, THE LOW ROAD, (Stratford Circus, London 2015). He was the Director of BAD BLOOD BLUES, Theatre Deli, 2018, and of the short film, ALLY, in 2020. As an assistant director, has worked onTHE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, Sheffield Theatres, 2019, and WHITE NOISE, Bridge Theatre 2021. John plays the dual role of actor and playwright in FAR GONE, which is on tour throughout the UK in 2022, including a show at The Dukes. www.jrwothomack.com Images: ‘‘Far Gone’ © Smart Banda</image:caption>

<image:title>Keir Cooper - How can we get and stay excited about a project from conception through to realisation and beyond? Keir Cooper, discusses mischief as a creative energy for all kinds of creative practice. Whether we call it mischief or perhaps punk, playfulness, danger or risk - how we might harness the permissions of creative space to find where the excitement lies? How can we get and stay excited about a project from conception through to realisation and beyond? Keir will discuss mischief as a creative energy, drawing on his multidisciplinary practice as a theatre artist and (mischief) maker. In a given project, what are the opportunities for mischief? How do we create “a smile in the mind” (a term borrowed from visual design)? How can we take our playfulness seriously and what is the benefit of such an approach? How can we balance this technique with other, more profound, more truthful creative effects we’re aiming for? Thinking about space, form, story, audience, expectation and context, and drawing from theatre, music, writing and visual projects as well as an approach to workshops. Consider this a workshop and a manifesto for mischief. This session will be relaxed throughout, providing the opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you like.</image:title>

<image:title>Rose Biggin - I nsights from writer and performer, Rose Biggin, on how to use voice, across all its meanings, to develop your creative practice. Voice can mean anything from tone, style, to outlook, and doesn’t end with the spoken or written word, it can be a way to frame readings of any ‘text’ - dance, theatre, you name it. Rose unpicks tips from her various writing practices and beyond to help anyone working with their own creativity. Rose has experience with short fiction, plays and live art, jokes for Radio 4, novels on theatrical themes, adaptations -- from book to stage and back again -- and academic research into story structure and immersive theatre. Expect to cover topics like working with expectations, bending and subverting narratives, character and autobiography, collaboration and co-writing, cutting across the noise, borrowing existing characters, and textual politics. This session will be relaxed throughout, providing the opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you like.</image:title>

<image:title>Mick Martin - What does it mean for someone to tell their personal story through dramatic performance? How do you create theatre that honours lived experience without exploiting or minimising it? Mick Martin, writer and co-director of Bent Architect, talks us through his experience of creating theatre and his approach to telling uncomfortable truths. Bent Architect’s play, Full English, sits squarely on the intersection of race, class and gender. It explores the difficulties faced by those in multiracial relationships, not just white racism, and the repercussions of this through the generations. The aim of Bent Architect has always been to honour and respect the truth of an individual’s lived experience without exploiting or sugar coating it. How can this be done to make a piece of work based on oftentimes harsh truths, but founded in love? In creating the piece, Bent Architect asked lots of searching questions and faced many difficult truths. The session will explore how they made their way through them. This session will be relaxed throughout, providing the opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you like.</image:title>

<image:title>Alexandra Donnachie Part 1 - What does it mean for an artist to tell their own personal story of trauma through dramatic performance? How do you protect yourself, mentally and emotionally, as you articulate your trauma to others? Alexandra’s first play was an autobiographical piece which she performs with her younger sister, Kate Donnachie. The play (3 Years, 1 Week and a Lemon Drizzle) is an exploration of the effect Alex’s eating disorder had on the sisters’ otherwise very close relationship. They play was self-produced primarily for budgeting reasons and although it was very well-received when it toured across the UK, including a run at EdFringe 2018 (Underbelly), no safeguarding measures, which might now be seen as non-negotiables in a rehearsal room, were put in place and so the process of making and repeatedly performing the play unfortunately had a damaging effect on Alex especially. In this session, Alex unpacks what she has since learnt from having the complete opposite experience when working on When We Died, which has numerous safeguarding measures in place for her, the wider creative team and, importantly, for audiences. She’ll share what she would – and does – do now, and indeed what she would advise other artists to do to protect themselves and those around them when making trauma-based work. This session will be relaxed throughout, providing the opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you like.</image:title>
